The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
