Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
