A recent study reveals that people who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
