British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
