Colombia's President Declares 'I Would Take Up Arms Again' if United States Invades.

Donald Trump and President Gustavo Petro have escalated the volume of their war of words, heightening strains in their relations following US forces attacked Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs drug factories and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Escalating Threats and Accusations

Addressing the press over the weekend, the US president threatened analogous use of force against Colombia, asserting the nation faces serious problems and governed by a sick man who enjoys creating narcotics and selling it to the US."

Although Colombia stands as the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the trade.

A Strained Partnership

This nation has long been a key ally of the United States in the struggle against narcotics trade and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, however, the relationship have soured significantly after Trump came to office.

The nation's narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters disbanded following a historic peace agreement.

The President's Strong Rebuttal

Upon being questioned whether military intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a narco," he stated.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Stop slandering me," he posted in a message.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And if they detain the nation's leader, which a large part of the country admires and supports, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Leader

He passed part of his youth belonging of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never took part in armed clashes. Upon leaving the group, he participated in creating the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and eventually served as an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the presidency.

"I pledged to never again hold a gun ... but for Colombia I would take up the fight," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Widespread Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister stated that the president’s protection team was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, but voices spanning the ideological divide have condemned the possibility of American military action targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Pressure

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization after he encouraged US military personnel to ignore unlawful commands. In October, the US enacted financial sanctions targeting Petro, his spouse and various associates.

Concurrently as the US increased its forces in the Caribbean and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted attacks on boats in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
